An Interview: Molly

I first discovered Molly’s music at one of Lisbon’s finest record stores, Carpet & Snares in September 2018. Her ‘Needs’ EP on local label Groovement, and in particular the track ‘Cloud Balcony‘ caught my ear due to its simplicity, deep sounds and infectious groove – the yinyl has never strayed far from my record bag ever since. Whilst her passion for music is as strong as ever, Molly now runs a stunning boutique hotel in Corsica. We got the chance to catch up with her about her radio show, working with Fred P and her life in Corsica.

Hi Molly, thanks for agreeing to this interview. How have you been and have you been up to anything fun recently?

Hi, my pleasure, thanks for having me 🙂

I’m doing great, living my life in Corsica, far from the overall madness … I did some family vacation recently in Rio de Janeiro and now I’m preparing the summer season of my hotel, here in Corsica. So i’m quite busy with this.

I’m also a mum now of a daughter, she is 1 year and a half now. She keeps me quite busy too 🙂

Beside that I’m still working on some new music , expecting one day, to finish my album…Patience is the key!

That’s amazing! Can you tell us a little bit about your hotel – what it’s like and why you decided to open one up?

Yes sure … 2 years ago I opened an hotel in Corsica. It’s a small boutique hotel, lost in the middle of the nature, very closed to the beach. The ideal place to relax and recharge.

The name is VILLA FLAKA. It’s a project we had with my husband and in 2019 we finally had a great opportunity. The construction took almost 3 years, it was very tuff, but we are very happy with the result and clients seems to really appreciate what we have built.

Taking things back to the beginning, can you tell us about some of your earliest music related memories?

I have a some memories when I was a teenager, hanging out in rock/punk  concerts, with my sister or my friends… I was really into rock, melodic hardcore, then brit pop … And finally I fell in love with Electronic music.

How did you get into dance music, producing and DJing?

I go into dance music when I discovered this music in clubs in London.

I really wanted to learn how to match records with turntables and vinyls.

Production came 10 years later, when i took the time to focus on it but I feel that I’m more a DJ than a producer 🙂

Can you tell us a little bit about your Rinse France – ‘Digging Into My Collection’? Outside of dance music, which genres of music are you passionate about?

This show reflects my records collection:) It’s a 100% vinyl set. I don’t prepare it, i just pick records into the shelves and start to records. It goes from ambient, to deep, US house, deep techno, Disco, Brazilian music 🙂

There is a common theme in your productions of deep, atmospheric synths and vocals layered over soft, yet driving sub-bass laden beats. Can you tell us about your process for making music? How do you pull from all your different influences to create your own sound?

Good question 🙂 My productions reflects my mood… I love deep and melancholic music and anytime I try to do something not deep I finally finish with a deep house track with leads, atmosphéric synths etc ..it’s what it comes from my heart, that’s it.

You had a flurry of great releases in 2023 – your most since 2018. How did so many releases come to fruition in such a short space of time and how did you choose which labels to release through?

Well, I’m pretty lazy with sending music … I had a couple of tracks aside and few labels I was working with asked me for some tracks. They were not planned to be release at the same time but some got delayed with the distribution or with the calendar and at the end they all came out almost at the same time … It was some music i did between 2020 and 2023…

Your ‘Needs EP’ On Groovement has been in my record bag for four or five years – ‘Cloud Balcony’ is such a simple, yet stunning track. Fast forward to 2023 and you’ve released another EP through them. How did you first get to know the Groovement crew, and what has drawn you to keep that relationship going?

Oh thank you! I know the Groovement label when, for the “needs ep “ I was looking for a label. My PR at that time suggested me this label. He introduced me to Jorge and he immediately selected the tracks. I really like him and Rui, their vision of the music business, their passion for music. I work with people I can really put trust in.

I absolutely loved the recording of your Waking Life set with Fred P. He also put together a ‘Reshape’ of your track ‘Sweet Afternoon’. How did these collaborations come about and are there more to come?

When know each others since a long time now, and I always been a fan of his music.

Having a remix of one of my track, from him was always in my mind.

When I asked him he immediately said yes and picked this track. I deeply respect him and his music and I feel lucky to be able to share the same passion with him.

Can you shout-out some of the artists that you have enjoyed playing alongside, producers and labels whose music has found a home in your record bag, and clubs that you’ve enjoyed playing most in 2023/2024?

I play very few gigs now, it’s a personal choice due to my new occupations: My hotel and first of all, my daughter. I pick my gigs and I feel very good with that…:) it was my main job but now it’s a hobby and my approach to the scene has changed a lot.

In terms of artists i played alongside, i mention FRED P & DJ DUSTIN.

What are your plans for the rest of 2024?

Taking care of my hotel and my family and finishing my albums (ambient & house)
