Radio show residencies have become commonplace over the past few years. The Hessle Audio show, PLO Man Radio, Cooking with Palms Trax are must listen radio for many music fans, however few shows are as respected or done as much for the scene as Tim Sweeney’s – Beats In Space on WNYU 89.1 FM. It has hosted many of the world’s best DJs since its inception in 1999 and is still going strong.
Although there were many great shows in 2016 deserving of this week’s Mixes To Dig such as Ge-ology BIS #816 and Shanti Celeste BIS #850, my favourite was Avalon Emerson’s BIS #842 due to its charm and uniqueness.
It begins with her beautiful edit of Björk – I Miss You, a track which instantly catches your attention with it’s heavy percussion and dramatic vocal. The mix then takes you through on a strange journey through acid, techno and other worldly sounds. These include several other Avalon tracks are included, such as Natural Impasse (see the great video below) and Streetwalker – Future Fusion (Cybernedit) which help to exhibit her talents as a producer. The highlight of the mix is the layering of The Magnetic Fields – I Shatter, over the heavy drums of Gaetano Parisio – A2, before ramping up the intensity again with Ellen Allien – Sehnsucht. This mix perfectly highlights that Avalon is willing to take risks, both as a DJ and a producer, while often producing great results with ease.
