Like many of you, there are several DJs who I ensure I listen to whenever they release a new mix. This includes the likes of Omar S, Ben UFO, Floating Points, Theo Parrish, and last but not least Gerd Janson. These DJs as well as several others always offer something slightly different, whether it be providing some new tracks, playing the unexpected (Floating Points and Four Tet, Plastic People Closing Party), or managing to mesh their style with that of another DJ in a classic b2b (Ben UFO and Helena Hauff, Sonar 2016).
Gerd Janson is a DJ and source of music knowledge that I have admired for many years for his work with RBMA. He is an extremely adaptable DJ, a selector in the true sense, with his classic Zeezout mix with Move D and recent b2b with Jackmaster being evidence of both of these statements. If you haven’t listened to the Zeezout mix, it is appended to the bottom of this article and please do give it a listen. Any mix which starts and ends with The Streets, while seamlessly blending Mustapha Dance by the Clash is a must listen.
However the mix to dig this week is Gerd Janson’s b2b with Krystal Klear in Dublin used for the Dekmantel podcast series. It is slow-paced mix for the first half before slowly picking up the pace, presumably after they had seen the new year through. Funk followed by disco, house and techno. As usual the selections are spot on with the likes of Two Tons O’ Fun – Just Us, Try to Find Me – Needs Ending, and Sonny Jenkins & The New York Pot Pourri Strings – That Friday Pay (Part 1) bringing the positive party vibes in the first half. The second half picks up the pace with E-Versions – Kahn, Inner City – Big Fun, and Todd Terje – Spiral. Both DJs complement each other particularly well with effortless blends and and a clear realisation of what to play and when to play it. With Gerd, soon to hold a month long residency at Phonox in Brixton make sure you head down to be supplied with the unexpected.
