After the intense, up-tempo mixes of previous weeks we thought it was time to slow it down a bit and bring you some easy listening on relatively bright and clear Sunday afternoon.
Moodymann, a talented producer and DJ from Detroit is an extremely interesting character, something that this mix and his infamous RBMA lecture with Benji B attest to. His productions which have been released a lot more infrequently in recent years are a staple for many DJs on the circuit such as MCDE, Jeremy Underground and Theo Parrish. Their limited pressings have led to them going for a premium on discogs. My favourites of his include Shades of Jae, Amerika (which includes the great sample of Gil Scott Heron) and The Day we Lost the Soul/Tribute! (with the news clippings from the death of the late-great Marvin Gaye).
This mix which presumably came along side that interview brings the usual mixture of disco, hip hop, soul, Italo and house that you can come to expect from a moodymann set. The sonically-diverse music he plays is built for a grand sound system. Stand outs from this set include Jamiroquai’s classic – Little L, Alexander Robotnick – Problemes D’Amour, Prince – Uptown and Fred Wesley – House Party. However this mix’s greatness is not really about individual tracks but about the slow-tempo, laid back vibe that Moodymann is expertly able to provide through the music and his voice overs as he checks on crowd.
"I still got my security on stage too" - as he refers to his entourage of ladies who he tours with.
A enigmatic character who never fails to get the party going, he’s next in London for the Hydra/Dimensions party on the 26th November. Make sure you check him out…
