Show Spotlight: Moxie

Alice Moxom, aka Moxie has forged an established and impressive career. Her label and party ‘On Loop’ has hosted some profound parties across the UK and has released some tantalising tracks. Prior to the pandemic her touring schedule took her across the world, as well as her label featuring the likes of Desert Sound Colony, Fold, Addison Groove and many more in a series of confident compilations and full length E.Ps.

Her career as a DJ and party starter however, began and has flourished through the form of radio. Starting out by covering for Sinden’s Kiss FM show all the way back in 2010. Following some fabulous features across radio she secured a weekly slot on NTS and since has become one of their longest standing residents and one of the poster girls for the best radio station in the world.

The earliest recorded show we were able to find was from November 2014, deep within the depths of Mixcloud. The first of more guests that I can count is label head of Unknown to The Unknown; DJ Haus. This show from November 2014 is a fitting first featured show. Slow and steady to begin, with a burst in tempo and mood. A perfect progression is a staple of any Moxie NTS show, moving from soul, hip-hop, pop even grime to the ever featuring dance and all its sub genres.

It is quite staggering the sheer number of guests Moxie has featured on her weekly show. Ranging from Krystal Klear to Tom Misch in 2016, O’Flynn to the likes of Haai in 2017, Ross From Friends to Roza Terenzi in 2018, Imogen as well as OK Williams in 2019. All of those mentioned above Moxie tapped into early, discovering promising and upcoming DJ’s and producers to feature on her show before then broke fully onto the scene and establish themselves as household names. Those mentioned plus countless others featured since appearing on Moxie’s show have skyrocketed and become internationally established DJ’s with their own accomplished radio shows across a wide array of stations.

Roza Terenzi is one of my personal favourite producers and DJs right now and has had a steady rise to where she is today. She featured on Moxie’s show with a guest mix in the Summer of 2018.

Roza Terenzi’s productions and DJ style are both inescapably 90s influenced and this is a period of music Moxie has taken a vast degree of influence from as well.

Moxie hasn’t just featured up-comers and new artists throughout the span of her weekly show, she has included and invited countless legends from across all corners of dance music. Including the likes of Mala in 2016, Four Tet in 2015, Dave Harvey in 2017 and another personal favourite Moxie show; a June edition in 2018 featuring George Fitzgerald. This show was roughly three months on from the release of Fitzgerald’s album; ‘All That Must Be’. George Fitzgerald is far from only an accomplished producer, he is also an excellent DJ and his style of hip-hop interjections and airy house are a perfect complement to Moxie’s diverse taste and selection.

The career of Moxie has grown and shone alongside the success of some of her closest friends and fellow DJs; Saoirse, Peach and Shanti Celeste. They have formed a formidable crew and have played notable gigs at the likes of Panorama Bar’s garden as well as the dusty Strawberry Fields Festival down under. This group of wonderful DJ’s are clearly best of friends and this helps them bring the best out of each other whilst DJing – a shining example being in this show from early 2019 featuring Peach and Shanti Celeste.

When these exceptionally talented DJs play alone it is fun but when get together to play all it can do is raise smiles and make people dance and this show does that. Thumping house, groovy garage all mixed beautifully.

The pandemic ravaged year of 2020 not only forced musicians away from clubs and venues but also from radio booths. Moxie’s shows are for now recorded from her home in London. The quality of the show however has not dimmed and in many cases I have found many of the 2020 shows to have highlighted that Moxie’s infinitely deep record bag seems to be utterly limitless. More rare, unknown and undiscovered house and garage blended with a barrage of unreleased tracks. As we near almost a year of Moxie’s at home broadcast I must mention her awesome cat Fontaine aka Fonz. An adorable kitten who has grown dramatically and is worth a follow on Instagram.

Her latest show bubbly and bright as ever featuring another guest mix from Kosh. Offering guests a chance to feature on her a show allows each show to be different, unique and fresh. It is hard to find any dance music DJ or potent electronic producer who hasn’t featured on her show.

Having just entered into the radio world myself, and chatting to fellow Mantissians, James and Tom among others, I have grown to appreciate and understand the commitment required for monthly shows. Hosting a weekly show on a platform such as NTS for over ten years requires an immense degree of dedication, talent and persistence. Moxie has bags of all three and here’s to the next five years of great guests, gandering across genres and unreleased gems heard every Wednesday, 3-5 on NTS.

Commercial radio still sucks.
