Tune of the Week: Cabaret Voltaire – Low Cool

Cabaret Voltaire have always had a knack for producing forward thinking music. The pioneering group have revamped their sound countless times; their discography is littered with experimental leaning styles that still sound fresh today. Low Cool is a compellingly slow moving track, with clear techno and ambient influences. The first half centres on an extract from “My Crasy Life”, a documentary/film about a street gang from LA. Sparse reverbing tones create a melancholic atmosphere, echoing the dark and gritty topics discussed by the gang members. Around the midpoint of Low Cool, the voices begin to fade away and a slow chugging kick drum comes into focus. Each successive layer then gradually raises the intensity of the track, while maintaining its sombre mood through to the end; a poignant showcase of production talent from one of the most important groups in the electronic music scene.
