Trent Reznor is a man who needs little introduction. He is the founder and principal member of Nine Inch Nails and has become a notable film score composer in more recent years, having written award winning music for films such as The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl.
This week’s tune of the week goes to Trent’s composition for Nine Inch Nails – ‘Just Like You Imagined’, a wonderful instrumental track released on ‘The Fragile’ album in 1999, and it features Mike Garson on piano (known for his work with David Bowie and The Smashing Pumpkins).
The tune begins with quiet ambience and synthesizers, providing the setting for the piano introduction. The energetic main body of the piece features three distinct melody driven sections demarked by short breaks; one of which layers synthesizers modelling Reznor’s voice. For the final section of the instrumental, the tune returns to the quietness of the introduction, but with piano and bass plating one of the basslines in unison. They fade in volume to a quiet, distorted percussion loop, which ends the song.
