As we soak up the final rays of the British summertime and build excitement for a Mantissa outing to witness one of the pioneers of the Detroit scene play next weekend, we’ve given the nod to an easy listening, reflective piece by Theo Parrish for this week’s tune.
Gullah Geechee is a cultural celebration that pays tribute to the descendants of the African people taken from their homes and forced to work on plantations in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, known as the Gullah and the language they spoke, the Geechee.
The track is centred on raw mesmeric claps and vocal chanting that Parrish masterfully uses to convey great emotion. Upon this layers of powerful spoken word and a jittery organ are added to create nothing short of masterpiece drenched in history.
