In an interview with Rhythmist last year, Valance Drakes cites the year 1997 and the release of Sleep Method Suite from Delarosa (real name Scott Herren, perhaps best known under his Prefuse 73 alias) as the key inspiration for his move into music production. It is easy to see how the likes of Prefuse 73 have had a major influence on Valance’s style as a musician, with his releases following a similar path of sporadic glitches laced on easy going hip hop foundations.
With Rework angles to evolve status, Valance provides one of his finest works; an explosion of colour and seamless rhythm in an otherwise patchwork landscape. Forming part of An honest approach to it, a combined re-release of two previous EPs for Detroit Underground, this track stands out not as a superior amongst the album’s other tracks, but as a gratefully received big crowd pleaser.
